UQ Indigenous Student Emergency Support Fund Established

20 April 2020

The Office of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement) has established the COVID-19 UQ Indigenous Student Emergency Support Fund to raise monies to assist our students in these uncertain and challenging times.

UQ is aware that many of UQ’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families are facing the overwhelming impact of COVID-19 including job loss, financial hardship and lack of access to essential items.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement) Professor Bronwyn Fredericks said “supporting students at this difficult time is crucial to student’s studies, health and wellbeing”.

The COVID-19 UQ Indigenous Student Emergency Support Fund has been established by the Office of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement), which will offer vital assistance to students across UQ’s campuses who have been affected directly and in-directly from the restrictions and other measures this pandemic has created.

UQ is seeking gifts for the fund from individuals, organisations and businesses. Each gift will be matched by the University and directed to UQ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students experiencing significant hardship. Funds will go towards students accessing essentials such as, food, accommodation and health care.

“Every dollar will help, and all support will be gratefully received and appreciated. It will all go towards helping UQ’s Indigenous students stay safe and healthy during this challenging time;”

“As Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students strive to achieve excellence in their ongoing studies at UQ, we are committed to delivering support to help mitigate the significant impacts due to COVID-19” concluded Prof Fredericks.
