The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit’s Outreach and Engagement team facilitates a regional youth leadership camp at Lake Perseverance Active Recreation Centre in Crows Nest.

This camp is the result of a partnership between the Outreach and Engagement team and the Darling Downs South West Region – Toowoomba Office of the Department of Education and Training.

This five-day camp provides an opportunity for up to 60 young Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students in Year 9 through to Year 12 to explore concepts of identity, leadership, the power of education as well as cultural awareness.

Students learn about the many varied pathways and opportunities available to them throughout their schooling journey as well as their post-school options. Over the five days, students take part in a range of activities including archery, canoeing, traditional language sessions facilitated by the Central Queensland Language Group, and workshops delivered by University of Queensland staff in areas such as biology and aerospace engineering.
