Goorie Berrimpa Officers

22 March 2019

This year there are two Goorie Berrimpa Officers: Lucas Schober and Murrawah Johnson.

Lucas is a proud Wuthathi, Yadighana and Yindjibarndi man from the Torres Strait and the Pilbara, born and raised in Darwin. Currently undertaking my third year in a Bachelor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. In the role of Goorie Officer, my main objectives are to implement the ideas of fellow students to continue to evolve Goorie Berrimpa and make our presence felt throughout not only UQ but also the wider SEQ community” said Lucas.

Actively engaging with students within the collective and increasing social interactions throughout community will allow us all to strive alongside each other as strong Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, leaving an everlasting impact as the future leaders of our people and our country” commented Lucas.

Murrawah is a Wirdi woman coming from Wangan (Western Wirdi) country in Central Queensland. The Wirdi-speaking people have kinship ties to the broader Birragubba/Burragubba peoples of North and Central Queensland. Murrawah also identifies with her ties to the Kangalou, Wiri, Yiman/Iman, Kullali, Munanjali, Goreng Goreng, and Bigambul peoples.

Murrawah is in her final year of a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies, with a minor in Political Science.

In the role as one of the Goorie Berrimpa (Indigenous Student Collective) UQ Union Student Officers, her goal is to ensure that close connection with the Brisbane Blacks community and the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community in our region is strengthened and maintained for years to come” said Murrawah.

She believes that students of the Indigenous Student Collective at UQ can be more successful on their tertiary journey if they can see themselves reflected in community, and that vice-versa, the community can see themselves reflected in the Indigenous student and staff community at UQ.

These positions act as spokespeople for UQ Indigenous students within UQU.
