UQ's ATSIS Unit visits Batchelor Institute

18 April 2018

Mr Dana Ober and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit's Mr Al Harvey travelled to Darwin visiting Batchelor Institute, the Australian Society for Indigenous Languages and Charles Darwin University.  The purpose of the trip was to identify Saibai Island specific Kalaw Kawaw Ya language resources and to investigate ways in which other indigenous language groups store and make available language and cultural knowledge resources.

AuSIL produced numerous Bible resources directly translating parts of the bible into Kalaw Kawaw Ya, much of this work occurring during the 1970’s and 80’s.

At Batchelor Institute they were able to identify many KKY resources produced by language speakers that undertook language documentation studies in the 1980’s.

Batchelor Institute now also produce many language resources for varying language groups across Australia.
