Semester 1 begins.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit is gearing up for Semester 1 at The University of Queensland with new and current students for 2018.

The Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement), Mr Shane Drahm said now all of the Pre-Orientation and O-Fest activities have been completed, it’s now down to the hard work.

The ATSIS Unit’s academic Student Support team completed training new and existing tutors for the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance and Retention program. The training session focused on policies, cultural awareness and sensitivity training and tips for tutoring.

Manager for Student Support, Rachel Crawford said the ITAR program is just one of the many avenues of support the ATSIS Unit has for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

“The Student Services team offers an environment that inspires growth personally, culturally and academically while fostering a student’s journey of success at UQ”, said Ms Crawford.

"If you're an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student, we have culturally appropriate student support programs and services available to provide assistance to you that is friendly and supportive", she said.

These Services include:

Admissions Support, assistance with your application to University and course guidance.

Personal support, Indigenous Student Support Officers are available to talk and answer any questions you may have. Including accommodation services for on-and off-campus housing.

Financial support, Commonwealth Scholarships for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students and help to get ABSTUDY.

Study support, academic study coordinators, who provide advice on all elements of your academic journey including study plans, course information, and tutor allocation.

Cultural support, with Confirmation of Aboriginality (why we require it and what elements it should cover) and cultural Identity, supporting you on your journey.
